St. Hugh Sodality of Our Lady of the Annunciation is a member of the Archdiocese of Washington Sodality Union, a Marian organization fostering spiritual and apostolic unity among the church of the Archdiocese, promoting a Sodality Way of Life. Sodality is a pathway to Jesus through Mary built on faith, hope and charity. Sodalists choose to live the Way of Life that recognizes the presence of Christ in their everyday life. The prayer basis of the Sodality Way of Life is founded upon the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius. The mission channels spirituality to service in the family, in the church and in the community.
St. Hugh Sodality of Our Lady was established on November 7, 1947 and is based on a Marian society that was founded in the mid sixteenth century (1563). It was then that a young Jesuit priest named Father John Leontius and his prized college students gathered around a little altar of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rome. They sketched out a single program to fit precisely the needs of that time, when the Church was under persecution. These young students bound themselves in faith, hope and love to Christ Jesus. They found in Mary the great inspiration to give themselves to the service of Christ. They loved the Blessed Mother for what she was and did for the Lord. They showed Our Blessed Mother special veneration, placing their groups under her loving protection. This was the beginning of the first structured Sodality.

“Mary, the Mother who cared for Jesus, now cares with maternal affection and pain for this wounded world. Just as her pierced heart mourned the death of Jesus, so now she grieves for the sufferings of the crucified poor and for the creatures of this world laid waste by human power. Completely transfigured, she now lives with Jesus, and all creatures sing of her fairness.”
- Pope Francis, Laudato Si', #241
